Back in the late seventies when I was in college I shared a house with nine other women. I knew two of the women from high school. Six of us share a kitchen on the main level of the house and four shared a kitchen in the lower level. It was interesting as college students to see how we all prepared meals. I made a lot of sandwiches and ate cold cereal. The woman that was considered our “house mother” ate only natural foods. She and her parents had lived in a commune that served only organic foods that were raised in the compound. One day we were the only two in the house. She asked me if I wanted to go to the health food store with her. I did not know there was such a place in the city where we attended college, so I agreed to go along. The health food store had organic foods which are free from chemicals and pesticides, local produce, whole grains, spices, dried fruits and organically grown vegetables, herbal teas, fruits and nutritional supplements. It was not very well cared for. I saw mouse droppings in several places and the place had a funky smell. I helped my house mate carry her things to the car and then into the house and I never set foot in a health food store for ten years.
Ten years later I was married and we were living in another city. I was making a special recipe for a family gathering and needed a spice that I was not able to find at any grocery store. One clerk suggested that I try the health food store because they had a large selection of fresh and dried herbs and spices. She gave me directions on how to get there. I was reluctant to go into the health food store, but I wanted the recipe to turn out so I went. I was pleasantly surprised at the health food store. It was clean and well organized. They had wonderful herbs and spices that were in bulk so you could buy small or large quantities at cheaper prices than the grocery store. A natural health food store is a great source of products and information for shoppers looking for healthy food alternatives. For example, people hypersensitive to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, oats and barley, shopping at a health food store offers these products.Also tea tree oil, which is available in any health food store is great for cleaning wounds.
Rice Drean (rice milk) and Soy milk from your health food store is a substitute for regular milk . I buy small portions of spices and save a lot of money compared to prices in grocery stores. I also buy natural peanut butter as an alternative healthy choice to store bought. Health food stores also carry natural vitamins made from food sources which are a healthy alternative to multivitamins you find in grocery stores. Most of what you find in the health food store is going to be fairly nontoxic and natural, but if you're having trouble, ask the store personnel for their advice on products as they are well informed on their products. Natural vinegar for example is better than the weird artificial kind made in a laboratory and sold at the grocery store. They also had natural juices, many different grains and prepared organic foods for takeout. I had passed the store numerous times without stopping because I had generalized that all health food stores would be dirty and smelly. I now shop there on a weekly basis and find if fun to try different things each time I go.

Healthy Food Stores with a wide range of high quality health food and health-care products and cosmetics are to be found in almost all cities and small towns. There are now many gourmet and healthy food stores that cater to the tastes of people seeking to remain diet-conscious. Organic foodstuffs have become part of the offer of the majority of large retail chains and a routine part of products offered by healthy food stores. I much prefer organic and fresh foods from Whole Foods or my mom's cooking or any healthy food stores to any frozen or fresh produce at big name supermarkets.
