Wisdom teeth removal is the most common application of oral surgery

by Gary Paulson

Wisdom teeth removal is never a fun thing to have done, and it can be quite expensive as well. No matter how much you hate to face the music, it is necessary to address this issue if you need to have your wisdom teeth taken out by a dentist. There are some options to consider when undergoing a wisdom teeth removal procedure.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on the procedure even if you have no insurance, as the usual cost is about $150 to $300. There are wisdom teeth removal practices that will take care of your problem for next to nothing. I discovered this when I was in my late teens and uninsured. The most popular time for wisdom teeth removal is during the summer (July and August are always very busy) and school vacations, and are usually a day procedure only. At least partial reimbursement for wisdom teeth removal is often available through various dental or medical insurance benefit plans.Thankfully numbness is rare, and when it does happen often it will resolve itself within the first month or two.

My condition was pretty bleak. I was constantly in pain and I had begun to get severe headaches and having them removed was the only way to eliminate painful symptoms. Since I was working as a waitress at the time I really didn’t think that I had any options. There was no way I could afford wisdom teeth removal at all but I also couldn’t afford to let the condition go on as it was.

Not only were the teeth affecting how I felt, they had an effect on how I worked, too. People were having difficulty understanding me and I was also having trouble staying focused. This isn’t good when you work in an upscale restaurant with demanding clients to take care of. I really needed affordable wisdom teeth removal and everyone at work knew about it.

Good thing I let my predicament be known among the staff members. One of the busboys had an older brother who was attending school to become an orals surgeon. The busboy explained about a program that the university has to help their students learn about wisdom teeth removal. This process isn’t for the faint-of-heart.

In fact, I kind-of shied away from the idea of being a guinea pig for a student. The way the university ran the program was pretty simple. The professor would extract the first tooth and the student would complete the wisdom teeth removal for a grade. The whole idea weighed heavy on my mind. However, when I thought about getting the awful teeth extracted for a fraction of the price of going to a regular oral surgeon, I couldn’t pass up the offer.

The Procedure

When I had the procedure done, I was given a local anaesthesia by the oral surgeon, which meant I was awake, but did'nt feel anything because the area the dentist worked on was numb. Because I was nervous I was given a mild sedative as well to calm my nerves. After the procedure I was given some pain killers to help while the sedative and anaesthesia wore off. I had a friend drive me home and stay with me for a day, to make sure I did'nt have any serious complications. When I got home, I had some bleeding around my gums and I used a gause to bite down on to control the bleeding and minor swelling that I had.

I was told by my doctor that if I had any serious complications such as bleeding that would not stop, fever, excessive swelling, infection, severe pain or just a feeling of sickness, or difficulty in breathing after a few days to call them immediately. When I got home, I was only able to drink liquid foods such as ice cream, yogourt, water, juice, and soup for about a week and a half before I could return to my regular diet.

Not only did I get the wisdom teeth removal procedure, I also wound up with a new lease on life. I was free from headaches and I was completely pain-free. I would recommend going to a student program for wisdom teeth removal to anyone. It is the most common application of Oral Surgery, and in some cases it is a very appropriate procedure.

Here is a related article about braces for adults

Ever heard of Invisiline? This is all the rage now! Adults and teenagers alike are taking full advantage of these new-age braces. They basically resemble a clear, compact mouth guard that slides over the teeth. Once they're in, it's truly hard to spot them. If you're curious about Invisiline, you should consult your dentist. He/she can probably tell you if you're a likely candidate. You may have to acquire braces for adults, but no one said you couldn't do it in style, Read More...
